Can you get something for nothing?

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Why not have what you want? Have you settled down with a notion that you can’t get it?

Are you accepting a disappointment as something you must suffer?

Do you look at the thing that you really desire as being far beyond your reach?

Do you carry around with you a heartache because you think your heart’s desire is finally and forever denied you?

Do you look on yourself as being down and out, with no chance to get back?

Do you think you are too poor to buy the things you like or even the things you need?

Have you done something that you think has brought a penalty on you–sickness, poverty, loss of freedom, grief?

Well, before you give it all up as hopeless won’t you just read along a little way in this discussion to see if your case is as bad as you think it is? I am not writing to sell you anything or to teach you anything or to persuade you of anything, but just to share with you the ideas that changed the life of a man who used to think as you do and who thought he had good reason to think so, but who has found out that he was mistaken and that life is not hopeless at all; and who believes that what helped him may help somebody else who is under a cloud similar to the one that he once lived under. Many things you want most are now within your reach.

It has been said that if a man were to offer twenty-dollar gold pieces for sale on the street at fifty cents each, there would be few buyers, because nearly everybody would leap to the conclusion that he was a fraud. If you will study the real reason why people instinctively feel that way, you will find in it the very secret of success in getting what you want.

You have heard it said a thousand times that “you can’t get something for nothing.” You may or may not think that you believe this to be true, but it is true, whether you believe it or not; and everybody deep down in his inner nature knows it is true. That’s why he is shy of any promise that promises too much. That’s why you are probably skeptical about the promise of this little piece of print. But just let this idea get a foothold in your mind: If it is a law that I cannot get something for nothing, then it must be true of this law, as it is of all genuine laws, that it works both ways; it must be true that I cannot give anything without getting something for it. Ever think of that?

Have you ever been surprised to find that when you liked or disliked a man or a woman, that person was sure to return the feeling you had for or “gave” to him? Have you ever noticed what a railroad company does that enables it to take in money? It gives transportation that is needed by people. Have you ever wondered why Henry Ford and John D. Rockefeller are so rich? Whatever else you may think of them, you must see that the world gives them money because they give something to the world–the one, a good low priced car; the other, good oil at a reasonable price. What does a department store do before it gets regular customers? It gives service, courtesy, good will, a square deal, accommodation, and so forth, to a community, which brings in the trade as the direct and inevitable result. What does an employee do before he gets wages or a salary? He gives a day’s work or a week’s or a month’s. What gets him a raise? Giving a little more than he is paid for, nothing else. What does a farmer do before he gets a crop? He gives the seed to the ground and gives it water and care. How does an artist or a writer win fame? By giving the world a work of art or some great literature. How do I win a friend? By giving him friendship, and in no other way.

Sometimes people say–and maybe you are one of them just now–that there are people who get something for nothing; who give nothing for what they receive. Did you ever study such cases or do you take somebody else’s word for it, as most of us do in such matters? Well, are you from Missouri? If you honestly want to be shown, you are on the only sound ground that there is.

Now, who gets something for nothing? The man who finds an oil well in his back yard? The woman who marries a rich man? The miner who stumbles upon gold? The fellow who wins in the lottery? The thief who takes a purse or the contents of a bank vault? The swindler who cheats the unwary out of his property? The real estate shark who sells worthless lots for big prices? The bootlegger who makes his own liquor with wood alcohol, puts bogus labels on it, and sells it as “just off the ship”? The heirs who destroy the old will or forge a new one so that all the property comes to them? The counterfeiter who makes hundred-dollar bills out of mere paper and ink? The chap who raises a thousand-dollar check to $10,000? Do all-or any-of these get something for nothing? I used to think they did. Often it looks so.

But the more you watch the individuals who do these things, the more you’ll see that the law works with them just as it works with you and me. It’s law–just as truly as the law of gravitation is law–and I can’t break it. Neither can you. Neither can anybody else. Did you ever know a gambler who got rich? Did you ever know a burglar who had anything left after his pals, his fence, and his lawyers got through with him? Did you ever know a counterfeiter who had cars and a country home and a yacht? Did you ever know a woman who married for money and was happy?

“Maybe not,” you say, “but they got away with the profits of the crooked deal!” Did they? How long did the profits last? Do you know?

Did you ever know anybody to keep the money he won in a lottery? Did you ever know the “lucky” finder of oil or gold, who hadn’t given something for it, to profit by it?

If you will let go of the rumors and fabulous stories about riches’ coming to people for nothing, and get right down and investigate, you’ll be surprised. Study the history of “depressions.”

What is success in business made of? I mean any success in any business. Some persons will say, “Hard work.” But that is not always true. Hard work alone will not insure success. You know plenty of persons who have worked hard but have gotten almost nothing for it. Does honesty make success? Not necessarily. Does dishonesty pay? No! Terribly upsetting, isn’t it, to be told that neither crookedness nor honesty succeeds? Well, that’s where you and I have been making a mistake. We have swung like pendulums from one extreme to the other. First we’ve tried to succeed by one method, then by the other. When crookedness fails, men preach honesty; when honesty fails, the preachers are dumbfounded and other men turn bitterly back to crookedness. What is the reason? Simply that neither mere dishonesty nor mere honesty pays; nor mere laziness, nor mere hard work. Nothing really pays but obedience to law–not man’s law but God’s law.

Gravitation is one of God’s laws, isn’t it? Who uses the law of gravitation? Anybody? Does it make any difference whether he is good or bad, honest or dishonest, crooked or straight, saint or sinner, rich or poor, fat or lean, white or black? It does not; the law of gravitation works for him infallibly, invariably, inflexibly, eternally, regardless of who or what he is. Who uses the laws governing the burning of gasoline to drive a car? Who uses the laws of friction to stop a car? Who uses the laws of electricity? the laws of light? Does it make any difference whether one is handsome or homely, whether he is freckled or pallid, whether he smokes or drinks or swears or goes to church or tights or steals or kills or loves? It does not. A murderer can drive a car or stop it. A clown can ride in an airplane. A fool can start or stop a dynamo. An idiot can set a fire. A preacher or a moron can explode dynamite. A sister of charity or a woman of the street will burn a hand on a hot stove. Good or bad, saintly or vicious–law works alike for all, and everything works under law.

But some laws seem to be greater than others, to include others, to transcend others. For instance, the laws controlling the airplane seem to enable it to break the law of gravitation. Of course, they don’t; they simply enable us to counteract the force of gravitation. The laws of the radio release us from conditions to which we have thought ourselves limited by other governing laws–laws of sound transmission. By studying these things I see that so soon as I begin working by any law I begin to benefit by it, and no other law can stop me; because all the laws of nature fit together, work together, help one another–they never work against one another. The law of gravitation helps me to use the airplane, it holds me down against the air. If it did not, I’d be flung off the world into space, airplane and all–not to mention other things that would happen. When I start my car, the laws governing the action of the engine seem to overcome the laws of inertia and friction–but no law is broken. If it weren’t for inertia there would be no momentum; if it weren’t for friction my clutch would not grip and my tires would not take hold of the road. I do not break laws; I use them.

Now, a law that works at all always works. You say conditions affect laws? No; fog, for instance, only obscures the light of the stars to my eyes–the stars still shine. Static interferes with the radio only as it obscures the broadcasting for me; the broadcasting is there just the same. Law always works–anywhere–everywhere–now and forever. Two and two make four, by mathematical law, in New York or Kansas City, in Paris or Tokyo, in the cathedral or the prison, in the home or the dive, on earth or Mars, today or in Caesar’s time, now or in eternity.

If this law that I cannot get something for nothing, and that therefore I cannot give without receiving, is law, then it works with the same infallibility and continuity as all other laws. It makes no difference who I am, where I am, how much I weigh, what color my hair is, or what my character is, this law works for me just the same. It is commonly called the law of giving and receiving, and it can be stated this way: What I give out comes back to me–multiplied–always. The “Come-back” is like the yield from seed.

Now, if you agree so far, don’t you see where this has led you? It has led you to recognize that you are where you are today because of what you have given out. You are getting it back multiplied, just as I’m getting mine. But what else does it mean? It also means that what you start giving out now is also going to start coming back to you–multiplied. You can change the crop you are reaping, but there’s just one way to do it: you can change the seed you are planting–change the sort of thing you are giving out. I did. It works, and nobody can stop it; nothing can stop it, no circumstance, no apparent handicap, no apparent misfortune, no “bad luck,” no enemy, nobody who “has it in for you.” What you give out comes back to you–what you begin giving out begins coming back to you. Any man, woman, or child can transform his life by transforming the thing he gives out.

Reclaiming God’s Abundance

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

In order for us to reclaim our natural Birthright of God’s Infinite Abundance, we need to clear our relationship with money. Since we have chosen to live in a system that uses money as our source of exchange, we need to eliminate our fear of it and realize that money is just a source of energy—period. It is not some awesome entity that comes into our lives to wield its power over us and rule our destinies. It is only because of our fear for survival that we have allowed money to have that kind of control over us.

First of all, we must eliminate poverty consciousness and start functioning with prosperity consciousness. Instead of worrying all of the time about not having enough money, we need to focus on our gratitude for the money we do have. Gratitude is a magnet that brings more of what we are grateful for into our lives.

Every time we spend a penny of our money, whether it is to buy groceries, pay our bills, for entertainment or whatever, we should bless it with gratitude for the service it is providing to us. Then we should let it go freely, knowing that money is just a source of energy and, like ALL energy, it will go out, expand and return to us for more service.

If we send our money forth grudgingly, bemoaning the high cost of living, fearing we won’t have enough to cover our expenses, hating to spend it on the necessities of life, we will automatically block the flow of God’s abundance.

The process of developing prosperity consciousness does not mean going out and charging unnecessary things and getting ourselves deeper in debt by spending money we don’t have. It does mean, however, that we recognize money is providing a service to us that we should accept with gratitude and appreciation.

As we move forward at warp speed, it is crucial for us to remember that we are responsible for cocreating our own prosperity. We must perpetually ask ourselves, “Is what I AM thinking, saying, feeling or doing adding to my prosperity and prosperity consciousness, or am I blocking my prosperity with fear and poverty consciousness?”

If what we are expressing is reflecting poverty consciousness, then we must ask ourselves, “What do we need to change in order to express prosperity consciousness and open up to God’s flow of abundance right now?” It is imperative that we hold tenaciously to our positive visions and energize them daily with our affirmations and the focus of our attention. We must be deliberate about our wealth. Through persistence, confidence and acceptance we will open our hearts to the God supply of all good things.

Another Aspect of Prosperity-Caring for God’s Creatures

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

I believe that caring for God’s creature’s is an important aspect of prosperity. When we consciously and freely choose to take responsibility for the welfare of another living being out of love, we experience a greater joy of living, a deeper satisfaction of giving, and the blissful realization that all living beings are innately connected. There is no sense of separation. Our lives become richer.

Most people love animals, or at the very least don’t want to see them hurt or suffering. Why then do we have nearly 30,000 dogs and cats being put to sleep every day? The reason there are more pets than loving homes is people’s acceptance of certain misconceptions about pet overpopulation.

10 Misconceptions about Spaying or Neutering a Pet
1. Just one litter and then we’ll have Fluffy spayed. (Studies show that virtually the entire pet overpopulation stems from the “just one litter” mentality.)

2. My dog doesn’t run loose, so he doesn’t need to be fixed.

3. We always find homes for the kittens. (And that means that an equal number of kittens at the pound will be killed.)

4. I want the children to witness the miracle of birth. (As Phyllis Wright, director of sheltering, Humane Society of the United States, says “People who let their dogs and cats have litters in order to show their children the miracle of birth should come witness the miracle of death performed in the back rooms of animal shelters all over the country.”)

5. My dog is so special/cute/unique, there should be more of him/her. (Hey, I can definitely relate to this one-my dog really is special, cute, unique, gorgeous and did I mention he’s incredibly good looking and smart as hell? Unfortunately, the shelters and pounds are full of special, cute and unique dogs, most with only a few days to live.)

6. It’s not natural. (There hasn’t been anything “natural” about dogs since we began to develop breeds thousands of years ago.)

7. I couldn’t look my dog in the eye if I had him castrated. (Could you go to the pound and look the dogs and cats in the eye who are about to be put to death? Could you even think about going to the pound and looking them in the eye?)

8. A female dog or cat should have at least one litter for health reasons. (Medically, factually and ethically indefensible.)

9. Neutering my dog will make him fat and lazy. (Too much food and not enough exercise make a dog fat and lazy.)

10. Fixing my pet will change it’s personality. (As with human beings the primary influence on an animal’s personality is the care with which it is raised.)

Gandhi said “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” If your pet is not spayed or neutered, make an appointment with your veterinarian or a pet clinic today. Encourage your friends and loved ones to do the same with their pets. By telling pet owners how many animals are put to sleep each day, consciousness is raised. Usually, people are unaware of these staggering statistics.

Giving and Receiving

Giving and Receiving
To create many flows of money in your life, learn to give and receive freely. You want to receive as well as give. Many of you love to give to others, yet it is harder to allow yourself to receive from them. You empower others by letting them give to you, for they then have the opportunity to demonstrate their abundance. People feel good about themselves when they give you something that you can use and appreciate. If no one could receive, no one would be able to give, which would block the flow of energy necessary to create abundance.

I am open to receive.
Do not see it as selfish for you to receive; see it as the completion of the circle of energy. The more you open to receive, the more you can give. Receive money from people, receive the form and substance of what they give you, and do so with warmth and graciousness. Imagine ten times the amount of money someone gives you coming back to them every time you receive money. As you envision success for other people, you increase your own magnetism to prosperity.

Be open to receiving with gratitude and grace. If you receive a check for ten dollars, thank the universe for it, rather than saying, “This is not enough.” So many people receive money and say, “I don’t know how I’m going to make this last; I wish I had received more.” They take the amount and make it less, and less will come next time. If you receive money with an image of more coming, with a feeling of joy and thanks, you create more ways for the universe to give you prosperity.

Prosperity Secrets

Prosperity Secrets

Webster says that money is a “medium of exchange, a measure of value, a means of payment.” In short, money is what people use to buy things. Nothing evil, unspiritual, or materialistic there. Money is simply a part of the physical-living process, and in the past it was as varied as stones, beads, feathers, fishhooks, animal skins and shells.

Today we give paper money and coins to people for the things they sell or the work they do. Simple, isn’t it? Where it gets complex is that many people do not have sufficient paper or coins to exchange for the goods and services they need and want. Why not? Because their consciousness is not attracting, or it is literally repelling, the energy of money. And that’s very curious, because the energy of all form, including money is already an inherent part of each individual’s Force Field, an essential part of his/her Light Body.

Recognize that it is the will of God for you to be wealthy. Understand that there is not anything that even resembles lack, limitation or poverty in his consciousness. You were born to be rich! You are the offspring of the infinite abundance of the universe.

Gratitude and thanksgiving are vital ingredients in developing a prosperity consciousness. Nothing opens the door to the Storehouse as quickly as a thankful heart.

You develop a prosperity consciousness by changing your mind–by replacing ideas of lack with ideas of abundance. Spend more time each day thinking about what you want rather than what you do not want. You don’t want lack so stop talking about it.

Keep your money circulating. If you horde it for a rainy day, you may have to spend it on an ark.

Critical thoughts and feelings of fear will hold back your good, while a consciousness of love and trust will speed up the flow. Love is the Fulfillment of the Law, and Faith is the energy that clears the channel.

Prosperity Step by Step, by Brad Jensen

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Here is one of my all time favorite prosperity articles, a fitting start for this Prosperity Blog.  It was a question about Wallace Wattles and his work that Brad responded to.  Enjoy!

(This is the response to an email message sent to me ‘by accident’)

> I’d like to know if anyone on this forum has gotten rich yet, using his
> ideas? Let us know. I’m a sales and marketing manager and the only way
> I can prove my effectiveness is by RESULTS. The best advice in the
> world won’t work unless we put it to work and carry it through. It’s
> one thing to SAY it works, but it’s another to DO it and have results
> to prove it. (Wattles says that too). Any millionares reading this?

It so happens that I am a millionaire, in that I own a company that I created that is worth at least seven million dollars, and I earn an income of over half a million a year.

And I started 22 years ago with a degree in Philosophy/Religion and a borrowed pencil.

I have been diligently exploring prosperity ideas, learning and teaching them for most of the last 20 years.

Here are the secrets of the universe:

1. The big secret first: our physical world is a dream world, and it works just like dreaming, but generally slower. As you acknowledge the dreaminess of it, and begin to work with it from that perspective, the apparent speed of action increases. The way to direct the world is through your imagination and will. Exercising your will strengthens it. You can exercise it by doing something unpleasant until it becomes pleasant.

2. You receive thru the same doorway you give thru. The way to receive freely is to give freely. Quality is more important than quantity, since the universe amplifies thought into circumstance. Begin giving, and let God perfect your giving.

3. Forgive God. Loving your neighbor is loving God. Forgiving your neighbor is forgiving God. When you see a lack of God’s love or grace in any condition - look again. Look deeper. Jesus on the cross said “How could you do this to me, God?” and then “I trust you, I accept your purpose as my own.”

4. No matter how you stumble and fall, are unable to meditate, turn your attention from your real self for years, hurt and are indifferent to the love of those around you, get back up and expect forgiveness from God, and accept his grace wherever you find it. Whether your friend or your enemy gives you something, it is a gift from your own true self.

5. Do not waste energy on the impossible. Do not try to convince anyone or change anyone’s mind. Do not ask others to make choices for you, do not make choices for others. Both of these are illusions and a denial of the love of God. The best thing you can do for anyone else is help them make a conscious choice, so that they can learn from it. The best way to teach is by example.

6. You are wealthy now with an abundance of what you are thinking about. The world is a creative engine, and will create whatever you are really thinking. Every thought in your mind is a prayer about you, no matter who the subject seems to be. The only way to manifest lack is to hold something against someone else. Give up all thoughts of offense, revenge, of being injured, of self-justification, of needing to defend yourself against others’ expectations, of the unfairness of life, of others getting some unearned advantage. Joy breeds joy and sorrow breeds sorrow. When you hear of someone’s good fortune, think “Good for them! God is blessing and prospering them, and I bless them also!”

Charles Fillmore says “The inexhaustible resource of spirit is equal to every demand. There is no reality in lack. Abundance is here and now manifest!”

And he is absolutely right!

7. Trust yourself consciously. You really do anyways! The key to mastery is to acknowledge reality. Reality is a simulation. The future pours into the past thru the funnel of your thinking. Change what you are thinking now, and the future will take care of iteself.

8. Your life is in a dynamic balance, based on your present thinking. What happens when you take 2% of the amount on one pan of a balance and put it on the other side? Of course that side goes down and the other goes up, and the change is complete. 2% of your waking life is ten minutes a day. Ten minutes a day of concentrated thought will change your life completely. As a starting point, you might print this message out and read it daily for one full month. When things start to change, don’t get excited and distracted, but stick with it. Don’t talk it away to others. Let the energy concentrate and build. The only thing God knows how to make is a miracle.

9. You don’t earn it, you learn it. “When you understand karma, it goes away.” In any challenging situation, ask yourself “What am I trying to learn here?” Then begin to act on that principle. Experiment with your life. Invest in your relationships by taking risks in your communication.

10. When you are stuck, find someone else with a similar situation, and teach them what you have learned so far. (Often they will come and find you!) Until you give it away, you don’t own it. This goes for wisdom above all things.

11. Understand that you will never create a situation that you can’t learn from. What would be the point? God is with you every moment -it’s his job. “I can handle this with God’s help” is the beginning and the ending of faith.

12. The only limitations are self-limitations. Let abundance begin right now. Watch out for tendency to “Name it and blame it.” Responsibility is the opposite of blame. When you blame yourself or others, you temporarily deny your power to change (which is wasting energy on the impossible again.) Sooner or later everyone in your life that you think is preventing you from being or having whatever you want, will either die or move away, and you will find out that the condition is made in your own mind. Why not act on this awareness now?

13. If you are alive, you deserve to be rich. God wants you to be rich. He is more willing to give than we are willing to receive - no matter how willing we are to receive.

14. We are infinite beings pretending to be finite. We have created forms and conditions to escape the limitations of formlessness. But let’s not forget who we really are, and let’s not pretend too hard.

The first step to abundant living is to relax, the second is to focus attention, the third is to concentrate, the fourth is joy, the fifth is to allow manifestation, the sixth is to give freely, the seventh is gratitude to the true source.

15. Let go of what you aren’t really using. If you are holding on to something (person, place or thing - or even an idea) because you think you might need it later, you are really telling yourself that you do not own that thing, you do not deserve it, and you do not believe you can recreate it in the future. These are all poverty thoughts. Clean out your closets, have a garage sale or give to Goodwill, but let go of all that spiritual cholesterol that is clogging your arteries of good.

16. Tithing is giving ten percent of your income to those groups or individuals that you see using spiritual principles in a way that you would like to have grow in your life. The secret to tithing is to understand that you are tithing now, through your thoughts, and that conscious tithing is just taking control of a process that is already occuring. Regular, conscious tithing builds your conscious power to accept God’s abundance in your life.

For most people, a good place to start is tithing to your church, your support group, someone who is teaching you, someone who is a good spiritual example to you.

Many churches and centers teach you to tithe to “Your channel for spiritual good”. Well, that’s the whole world if you choose to live in the Spirit.

I say give where you feel good about giving - where you can give without doubt or restriction. If there is no such place, create one. Give with no strings attached, and receive the same way.

Thank you for sharing with me the opportunity to express on this subject. I have been enormously blessed as a result.
